Interior Biology
Interior Biology. Designing around human experience.
The quality of an interior is not determined by appearance alone.
Light, air, temperature, sound, water, materials and environmental control all influence how people experience a space. AKMZA brings these considerations into the design and engineering process.

What is Interior Biology?
Interior Biology is AKMZA's human-centred approach to environmental design. It considers how lighting, air quality, acoustics, thermal comfort, water and sleep conditions affect the people who use a space, and coordinates those conditions through the building's engineering and automation.
Six environmental dimensions
Light
- Lighting designed around visual tasks
- Natural daylight and glare control
- Appropriate day-to-evening transitions
Air
- Ventilation and filtration
- Humidity management
- Environmental monitoring and HVAC integration
Acoustics
- Sound isolation and reverberation
- Acoustic comfort and privacy
- High-quality listening environments
Thermal Comfort
- Temperature zoning
- Cooling coordination
- Shading and environmental controls
Water
- Filtration and water-treatment coordination
- Subject to water testing and project requirements
Sleep and Recovery
- Bedroom lighting and blackout systems
- Acoustic conditions
- Environmental controls designed to support comfortable rest
A home should evolve with the people who live in it.
Children need environments that support different activities: learning, play, sleep and relaxation. We consider glare, light intensity, visual complexity, acoustic conditions, temperature and the ability to create quieter spaces.
Lighting and environmental design can support comfort and appropriate routines, but they are not medical treatments for hyperactivity or ADHD.
Interior Biology for developers
These principles can also be incorporated into branded residences, luxury residential developments, wellness facilities, private clinics, premium hospitality and executive workspaces. The objective is not to add more technology. It is to create better-performing environments.
